A Mini Guide on Syphilis Infection & Its Treatment

Syphilis is a common sexually transmitted disease that is caused by Treponema pallidum bacteria. It is contracted through the direct contact with the lesions or sores that are part of the infection. A pregnant female with syphilis can spread the infection to her foetus through the placenta or during birth. It can result in premature birth, stillbirth, and several congenital disabilities. After the infection, it takes about three weeks for the first signs of syphilis to appear.

Signs and Symptoms
The first signs of infection are called primary syphilis. It begins with painless sores on the skin or the genital lining. The wounds will be visible when they’re present on the woman’s outer genitals or penis. They can also be hidden from view under a man's foreskin or in a woman’s vagina or cervix.

If primary Syphilis is left untreated for about 1-2 months, other signs and symptoms of secondary syphilis will develop, including

A red-coloured skin rash that can appear anywhere on the body, but usually is present on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet.
Sores in the mouth and on the genitals or anus
    Swollen lymph glands
    A sore throat
    Mild fever
    Joint aches
    Fatigue
    A headache

These symptoms may occur and go over a period of 1 - 2 years. If the Syphilis infection is untreated, the bacteria may spread throughout the body and damage many organs. It can cause multiple chronic conditions ranging from heart disorders to neurological difficulties and even death in a few cases.

A newborn who gets a syphilis infection from his mother usually appears entirely well. About half the time, however, he/she might have symptoms like skin ulcers, yellow-mucus nasal discharge, rashes, bone infection, fluid retention, swollen spleen and liver, fever, anaemia, and jaundice. These findings might be present at birth or develop within the initial months of life.
